Two Hospitalized As Precaution After River Grove Fire

RIVER GROVE, Ill. (CBS) -- Two people were transported because of chest pains when fire damaged three apartments in a 50-unit building in west suburban River Grove.

The fire broke out on the fourth floor of the five-story building at 8245 Belmont Av., said River Grove Fire Capt. Sean Flynn.

The initial firefighters on the scene were able to connect to hydrants, but found the water supply severely restricted by ice. As a result, Flynn said, a second alarm was sounded, bringing in more than 40 fire companies from across the western suburbs.

Flynn said when two elderly residents of the building said they were not feeling well, paramedics transported them to Loyola University Medical Center, in Maywood, as a precaution.

The flames spread from one fourth-floor apartment to a second, and then to a fifth floor apartment, before it was brought under control. Flynn said there was also substantial water and smoke damage on the western end of the building.

Although the cause of the fire remains under investigation, Flynn said neighbors reported that work was being done on the plumbing.
