CHICAGO (CBS) -- Two Chicago police officers who were shot Sunday morning have been released from the hospital. They were seen leaving via police escort with several officers standing at attention, just a few hours after the incident.
The shooting happened in the 1500 block of South Lawndale about 7:19 a.m. as officers responded to an alert of shots fired. As they arrived, they saw an armed suspect in an alley who began shooting, police Supt. David Brown said at a news conference. The suspect was shot in the leg, police said.
"As they approached this person, the offender turned and immediately began firing a gun at our officers striking one of our officers in the hand and a second officer in the leg and shoulder above his vest," Brown said.
Brown said that there was no foot pursuit by the officers, who were in uniform when the suspect, who police say is 45-years-old and a convicted felon, began shooting.
Officers were both struck.
