Tribute Concert For Late Pastor, Gospel Music Legend Hayes
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A gospel music legend who passed away earlier this month will be celebrated with a musical tribute Friday night in the South Chicago neighborhood.
Dr. Charles Hayes, who led the choir at Cosmopolitan Church of Prayer in the Woodlawn neighborhood for more than 55 years, was one of the longest-serving pastors in Chicago history.
He was also a legend of gospel music, whose reach extended far beyond the city limits, leading The Mighty Warriors, his church's choir.
They recorded more than 30 albums in more than 50 years, and have performed all over the world.
Sweet Holy Spirit Church at 86th and South Chicago Avenue was expecting a packed house Friday night for a tribute concert. Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Gov. Pat Quinn are among those expected to attend.
Hayes died on Feb. 12, at the age of 76. He had been ill for some time.
