Tribune Publishing's New Name: 'tronc'

(CBS) -- Tribune Publishing Co. announced it's changing its name to tronc, short for "tribune online content."

The newly renamed company, which owns the Chicago Tribune and other metropolitan dailies across the U.S., will also transfer its listing from New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) to Nasdaq, officials announced in a news release Thursday.

"Our rebranding to tronc represents the manner in which we will pool our technology and content resources to execute on our strategy," Chairman Michael Ferro said in a prepared statement.

The name change to tronc, Inc. is effective June 20 and comes as the company fends off takeover attempts by media chain Gannett.

Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong also joined the company's board as vice-chairman.
