Amtrak Passenger Shoots Train Conductor In Naperville

(CBS) -- An Amtrak passenger shot a conductor on the Naperville train station platform Tuesday afternoon, police say.

Officers were called to the train station about 4:45 p.m. and found the victim, a conductor, shot in the torso. He was taken to Edward Hospital, alert and conscious, Naperville Police Cmdr. Louis Cammiso says.

Meanwhile, police found the shooting suspect being held down by fellow Amtrak passengers, Cammiso says. The suspect is a Wisconsin man in his 70s. He was taken to the police station, Cammiso says.

Police were investigating the circumstances of the shooting, which occurred on a Southwest Chief train that runs from Los Angeles to Chicago.

"I just know the conductor stepped off the train on the platform, and the suspect was on the train and reached through a window and shot the victim," Cammiso says. "Some passengers assisted the victim, and some passengers secured the suspect and held him for police."

A handgun was recovered at the station.

The conductor is a 45-year-old resident of south suburban Homewood, CBS 2's Dana Kozlov reports.

"We are aware of an incident near Naperville, Ill., where an Amtrak employee sustained a non-life threatening gunshot wound," Amtrak said in a prepared statement. "We are cooperating fully with local authorities who have a suspect in custody.  Additional information will be provided when available."

Commuter rail traffic in the region was experiencing delays Tuesday evening.
