Too Early For A Christmas Tree? Not To Sellers

(CBS) -- At the Gethsemane Garden Center in Edgewater, manager Brian Miller says they'll sell thousands of Christmas trees this holiday season, and it's never too early to get one.

No, it's not too early, he says.

"We bring them in about mid-November, so as soon as we get them in you certainly can buy," he says. "They retain their moisture in the needles for upwards of two months."

Miller says you want to start with the right tree—one that's clearly healthy.

"Some needle-drop is going to be natural and inevitable, but if it's shedding  quite a bit of needles, that's not a good sign. That's a sign the tree's probably dried out at some point," he says.

Once the selection is made, it's important to cut off a small portion of the trunk so the water is easily distributed.

Miller says plain tap water is fine.

At the smaller Bob's Tree Lot in the South Loop, the trees were arriving Monday.

Prices range from $30 to $400, depending on the trees.
