Girl, 2, shot and wounded on Chicago's Southwest Side

2-year-old girl shot on Chicago's Southwest Side

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 2-year-old girl was in the hospital Saturday night after she was shot in a home in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood.

At 7 p.m., the toddler suffered a gunshot to the right leg in an apartment building in the 2500 block of West 61st Street. Chicago Police officers and investigators were seen going in and out of the building through the night.

A police media notification report said the girl was shot by an "unknown offender." But CBS News Chicago's newsroom reviewed dispatch audio, which indicated the girl was shot after another child got a hold of the gun.

It was unclear late Saturday whether the gun was put away or improperly stored.

The 2-year-old was taken to the University of Chicago's Comer Children's Hospital in good condition. A gun was recovered at the scene.

The apartment building where the shooting happened is located near a schoolyard where young people were seen playing soccer Saturday evening as the investigation was unfolding. The schoolyard belongs to Donald L. Morrill Math & Science Specialty School, a public elementary school at 6011 S. Rockwell St.

There are many children in the neighborhood, and many neighbors have been left devastated upon hearing the news of a small child being shot.

Wentworth Area detectives were investigating late Saturday.
