Three People Shot Near U.S. Cellular Field After Police Chase

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Three people were shot Tuesday near U.S. Cellular Field following a police chase.

The shooting happened before noon on Wentworth, at the top of the 35th Street exit ramp from the outbound Dan Ryan Expressway.

The incident started when Chicago police witnessed a shootout at Ferdinand Street and Hamlin Avenue on the West Side, around 11:15 a.m., according to Pat Camden, spokesman for the Chicago Fraternal Order of Police. Shots also were fired at police, and officers began to chase three men in a car that sped east on the Eisenhower Expressway, and continued south on the Dan Ryan.

As police gave chase, someone in the suspects' car shot at an unmarked police car near 28th Street on the Dan Ryan. The officers returned fire, according to Camden.

The suspects pulled off the Dan Ryan at 31st Street, hit another vehicle, and crashed into a snowbank along Wentworth Avenue, just north of the White Sox ballpark, near 35th Street, Camden said.

When officers approached the car, someone inside again pointed a gun at police, who shot at the three men. It was not immediately clear if all three men were wounded by police, or in the previous shootout.

Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said three people were taken to hospitals with gunshot wounds; two to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, one to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County. Two of the three suspects were taken to the hospital in serious to critical condition.

No officers were injured.
