Suspect Wanted By Cops Crashes Vehicle, Kills Man In Elgin
ELGIN (CBS) -- One person died and two others were hurt -- one critically -- when a car driven by a man wanted by police broadsided another vehicle, which rolled into a nearby home in Elgin.
The motorist, 34-year-old Stephen Luellen, of Elgin, was on parole, and has a history of trying to elude police. In fact, Elgin Police Cmdr. Glenn Theriault said Luellen was pulled over on an arrest warrant for aggravated fleeing and eluding, and allegedly sped off when police tried to stop him.
Police elected not to chase Luellen's car. But Theriault says the vehicle ran a stop sign at a high rate of speed at the corner of Liberty Street and Jefferson Avenue and smashed into another auto, which then rolled over, killing its driver, 35-year-old Miguel A. Tellez of Carpentersville.
Samuel Garcia lives just a few steps away from where the crash happened.
"My mom told me to get out of the house and then we saw the two cars…they crashed," said Samuel.
Theriault says police found drugs in the Luellen's car. He is reported to be in serious condition, under police guard, at Saint Alexius Hospital in Hoffman Estates; the injuries are said not to be life-threatening. A woman who was a passenger in Luellen's car was transported in critical condition to Sherman Hospital, in Elgin.
