Cook County Inmate Stabs Detainees With Pen, At Least One Guard Injured
(CBS) – At least three Cook County Jail inmates were rushed to the hospital Friday afternoon after being stabbed, and a correctional officer was also being treated for injuries, officials said.
Ambulances could be observed taking patients away around 4 p.m. at 31st and California.
The three prisoners were in serious to critical condition; two went to Mt. Sinai Hospital, while the third went to Stroger Hospital, a spokesperson for the Chicago Fire Department tells CBS 2.
Cara Smith of the sheriff's office says the injuries occurred when several inmates began fighting in a "super max" security division. One inmate had a pen and used it as a weapon, and the three detainees had non-life-threatening injuries.
The injured guard was exposed to a caustic spray as officers tried to subdue inmates, she said.
