Thousands Pedal Down LSD For 14th Annual Bike The Drive

CHICAGO (CBS) -- It's a sight you only get to see once a year - a view of Lake Shore Drive from a bicycle.

21,000 people registered for the 14th annual Bike the Drive from 5:30-11 a.m.

It's not clear how many people decided to stay in bed when they saw some rain this morning, but one of Chicago's busiest streets was a sea of spandex and Schwinns.

"This celebrates the lakefront and the city," Burke said. "It's the kickoff to the summer and the cycling season, though a lot of people bike year-round now. It's just so exciting to see families out here, people from all over the city having a great time."

Several bikers appeared bleary-eyed, including one man who had been at the Hawks game, which went into double overtime, and woke up after five hours of sleep.

Cell phone use while biking was discouraged, but a woman riding in the back of tandem with her dad says since she couldn't steer, she was able to take plenty of pictures.

Five-year-old Violet of Chicago described the experience from her seat in a bike trailer as "like riding on a cloud."
