There Are Opportunities To Innovate In The Chicago Medical Field
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, "Employment of dietitians and nutritionists is projected to grow 21 percent from 2012 to 2022, faster than the average for all occupations." While most people think of the standard physician profession when it comes to jobs in the medical field, health care is such a broad field that it can encompass a myriad of other professions.
For those looking to enter the field of health care, it is important to understand all of the different dynamics that can be involved in patient care. Dr. Arielle Levitan is an Internal Medicine physician practicing on the North Shore, but offers some advice in venturing outside of the standard doctor's office profession. Co-founder of Vous Vitamin, an online venue for information about health and vitamins, Dr. Levitan offers insight on this growing area of health care.
Vous Vitamin allows customers to take a brief (but detailed) survey about their diet, exercise and lifestyle and then it creates a multivitamin tailored to their individual needs. It provides them with a simple pill (take two daily) solution that is of the highest quality, purity and is created based on medically sound principals.
What are your thoughts on employment opportunities in the medical field?
"I believe medicine is a solid field with many job opportunities. I think my current business outside of my practice shows that there are many ways to put this degree to use. One can still help empower people with knowledge about health without formally practicing medicine. This start up has given me an opportunity to employ my medical knowledge, interpersonal skills and what I've learned about health care in a very different way."
What advice can you offer others going into this field?
"There are many constraints placed on physicians today because of many societal changes. However, with this comes so many opportunities to innovate in both patient care and consumer health. Also, medical research has advanced so much in recent decades that there are chances to apply science in new and exciting ways in both the practice of medicine and the business arena."
