The Bernstein Brief: Oh, Johnny
By Dan Bernstein-
(CBS) Until we see any surveillance video, we have no real idea of the facts in the latest Johnny Manziel incident.
But having to type the words "latest Johnny Manziel incident" is why Cleveland Browns officials had to talk sternly yet again with their gallivanting backup quarterback. This time it was a brawl at 2:30 a.m., in the luxury hotel where Manziel lives, involving an overzealous fan with a criminal record and members of Manziel's group who felt compelled to use their fists.
If the Browns still care about developing the talent who enticed them enough to be worth a first-round draft pick, they will advise Manziel that being out partying in the wee hours is probably not evidence of the best judgment, particularly for someone already trying to overcome a shaky reputation. They may tell him that actual security can be provided for him if need be.
They may also wonder if his living elsewhere and more privately -- perhaps somewhere other than an elevator ride to and from plenty of downtown public drinking -- would be something wise to think about.
