The Bernstein Brief: Long Time Until Playoffs For Cubs

By Dan Bernstein--

(CBS) The regular season is only two-thirds complete, even though we all seem ready enough to get on with things.

There's no fast-forward button on baseball, even if at 69-41 the Cubs are now registering at a 100 percent playoff probability at both Baseball Prospectus and Fangraphs. If this were a family car trip, we'd be at the point where the kids are fidgety and mom and dad are getting annoyed.

Yet 52 games remain between now and what looms. Enjoying the moment is great for those who can, staying in the now and enjoying the ride and all that, letting late summer unspool as the days shorten and the back-to-school sales kick in.

We'll bide our time debating postseason roster options and potential matchups or how the pitching rotation and bullpen will be optimized. There might be a waiver trade before the deadline.

Such are first-world baseball problems for a team that has sewn up what it can just over a week into August, but the journey continues.

Are we there, yet?
