The Bernstein Brief: Emery's Just Wrong
By Dan Bernstein-
(CBS) At the very same time general manager Phil Emery was rambling to the pregame show Monday about the Bears' "top-down" system that's set up in "very much a military fashion," his own bosses were proving that completely untrue as they met to discuss the need for a coaching change.
What's more, Emery is the one who told Bruce Arians that he would have to keep some holdover assistants on his potential Bears staff, a bizarre directive that helped drive Arians out the door to a better job in Arizona. Emery hired defensive coordinator Mel Tucker and even told him what defense to run. And he hired special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis, who had initially interviewed for the top job.
This is the furthest thing from "top-down." More than anything, it's bottoms-up.
And if the U.S. military were to actually operate like this, we'd all be in deep trouble.
