The Bernstein Brief: Cubs May Be Ahead Of Schedule

By Dan Bernstein--

(CBS) After only 14 games, Cubs fans must prepare to confront an important existential decision.

In or out? Right now.

This may be ahead of schedule pursuant to Theo Epstein's carefully articulated plan to return the Cubs to contention -- certainly some within the team's management are pleasantly surprised at the acceleration and the 8-6 start -- but it needs to be recognized that the dormancy is indeed over.

The acquisition of Joe Maddon and the signing of Jon Lester were indicative of the move into an active phase, and the gangbusters arrival of Kris Bryant and the ensuing promotion of Addison Russell made it differently tangible. The concept is abstract no longer.

So after years of switching off any mental circuits concerned with game action or outcomes, emotional risk is back on.

There are 148 games left to go. They matter again, whether you're ready or not.
