The Bernstein Brief: Congratulations, NFL!

By Dan Bernstein--
CBSChicago.com senior columnist

(CBS) Times have been rough for the NFL away from the field, so let's all get together and observe a brief moment of appreciation for a notable achievement by the league.

Nobody got arrested in September.

It's true -- as reported Thursday by Reuters, they went a full calendar month without a player arrest for the first time in more than six years, after averaging one per week for the last five. Also remarkable is the fact that it's the first time the NFL has had an arrest-free month during the season in 15 years.

One has to go all the way back to Ahmad Brooks of the 49ers on Aug. 26 to find a new entry on the NFL police blotter.

So give yourselves a big pat on the back, guys, for not being caught committing any crimes for an entire 30-day stretch.

We're so proud.
