Three 13-year-old boys arrested following fatal crash with stolen Kia

71-year-old man dies after crash involving stolen vehicle in Robbins

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Three 13-year-old boys are in police custody after a fatal crash involving a stolen vehicle in Robbins on Sunday.

According to a spokesman for the Robbins Police Department, around 2:30 p.m. an officer noticed a late model Kia with a broken driver's side window heading north on Kedzie Avenue. But while heading toward the Kia, the officer noticed smoke from a crash blocks ahead.

The officer then found that the stolen Kia was involved in a collision with a Ford Taurus. A 71-year-old man was pulled from the Ford and then transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

"We were the first arriving unit and found one vehicle with heavy damage in a ditch with a person still inside the vehicle," said Fire Chief Nick Malley Sr. with the Robbins Fire Department.

Witnesses who wanted to remain anonymous say the 71-year-old driver was pulling out of the Saint Peter Claver Church parking lot when he was struck by the Kia, which police say was stolen.

He ended up in a ditch, while the Kia crashed into a tree.

"The guy was coming out of his parking lot down there, and they hit him. And he spun out three or four times," a witness said.

"I don't even think they took driver's ed, so how are you stealling a car?" said another.

The 13-year-old boys were found in the Kia and arrested on scene.

They were in custody at the Robbins Police Department Sunday evening, and charges are pending.
