Boy, 16, wounded in shooting on CTA Red Line train near Chinatown
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 16-year-old is at Stroger hospital after he was shot Sunday morning on the CTA Red Line.
A suspect police arrested Sunday morning was already released because, police say, further investigation led them to believe the shooter to be a different man pictured in a community alert.
Police tape blocked off the entrance to the train at Cermak and Chinatown as police and first responders surrounded the area after the shooting on the train just after 2 a.m.
The teen was shot in the ear and eye and told police he heard multiple shots, but he was not able to share much more. He was rushed to Stroger in what police called serious condition.
CBS 2 checked in with the hospital Sunday, but because he is 16, a spokesperson said they would need parental consent to release his condition and they don't have it.
This shooting adds to spiking violence CBS 2 has tracked on the CTA for a full year now -- on the Red Line in particular -- investigating the issues and what the city is and isn't doing to address them.
Crimes like aggravated assault, aggravated battery and criminal sexual assault are all at all-time highs since 2015. Homicides are, too. There have been five this year -- another high since 2015.
There was a witness to this shooting incident who relayed information about the shooter to police. CBS 2 asked if camera technology or the unarmed security guards currently deployed on the system were involved, but no one would answer those questions.
There was no response from the CTA.
