Chicago shooting: Teen killed, woman hurt in Ashburn alley

CHICAGO (CBS) -- An investigation is underway after a deadly shooting left a 16-year-old dead and a woman wounded after a party outside an event space in Chicago's Ashburn neighborhood.

City officials say the party took place at a venue not licensed to hold such an event.

Those victims were both transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center. The teen died of his injuries. The second victim, a 36-year-old woman, was listed in good condition. She was shot in the leg.

The teen has been identified as Darquan T. Smith of Chicago.

Police say the shooting unfolded just before 10:30 Saturday night in the 3400 block of West 79th Street. It appears shots were fired after the victims left a party that was happening at a venue called A Luh Swag.

Video of the scene shows the blown out storefront with tables and chairs turned over.

Police say the 16-year-old and 36-year-old were guests at the party and had left. The pair was standing in an alley about a block away when they were shot.

"When you get a lot of people who are in one place someone especially with young people someone is going to have a weapon," said 18th Ward Ald. Derrick Curtis.

Curtis confirmed that the gathering was in fact a repass, which was held illegally at the venue.

"They shouldn't have been having a party at all because number one: They are not licensed for it or zoned for it," he said.

CBS 2 confirmed with the ctiy's Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protections that A Luh Swag was not properly licensed to hold such an event.

CBS 2 made several attempts to get in touch with the venue but has not heard back yet.

The teen suffered a gunshot wound to the head. The woman was shot in her left leg.

Both were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, but Smith was pronounced dead at the hospital.

It remains unclear what led to the shooting and if the victims were the intended targets.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Chicago Police Department.

No arrests have been made.
