CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 17-year-old girl was shot at a CTA bus stop Monday morning on the South Side, while on her way to school.

Police said the girl was waiting for a bus near 102nd Street and Commercial Avenue shortly before 8 a.m., when a man walked up and demanded her cell phone.

Before the girl had a chance to respond, the robber shot her once in the stomach, police said.

Police said the suspect fled east toward a set of railroad tracks without the phone, then headed north.

The girl's aunt said her niece is an A and B student who has already received a college scholarship

The girl was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in serious condition.

Police said she was conscious when the ambulance arrived, and told officers what happened, but only had a vague description of the gunman.

The girl, an aspiring singer, is a senior at EPIC Academy school, which issued a statement saying they were "saddened and horrified" by the shooting.

So, too, were students.

"It's basically shocking right now," said Robert Padilla. "It could happened to any one of us. She's a real good friend of mine."

"It's very sad to hear about it," said Michael Padilla. "We're in South Chicago. It's not very safe. Our students should be safe. We have to be careful wherever we go."
