Teen Driver With Valid Permit Ticketed After Fatal Crash
(CBS) -- Batavia police say a teenager with a learner's permit was behind the wheel of a car involved in a recent deadly crash with a motorcyclist.
Batavia police say the 15-year-old girl and the 20-year-old motorcyclist were traveling in opposite directions on Randall Road and each had a green light as they approached Main Street around 8 p.m. on Aug. 4th.
The teen was driving a 2009 Pontiac Vibe and was about to make a left turn when she noticed motorcyclist Justin Retherford-Speer at the last minute. Police say the car stopped, the 1994 Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle tried to stop, and skidded onto its side. Retherford-Speer was thrown from bike and hit the car.
Police say the 15-year-old had a valid learner's permit and was with a licensed adult driver.
Retherford-Speer had a driver's license but no motorcycle classification.
Alcohol or distracted driving did not appear to have been factors, according to police.
The 15-year-old has been ticketed for failure to yield while making a left turn.
