CHICAGO (STMW) -- A 16-year-old boy was charged with shooting a 12-year-old boy last month in the West Side Austin neighborhood.

The teen, whose name was not released, was charged Tuesday night with one count of aggravated battery with a firearm, according to a statement from Chicago Police.

About 6:15 p.m. April 29, the 12-year-old was walking in the 5900 block of West North Avenue when he heard gunshots and realized he had been shot, police said.

He was taken to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park and later to Stroger Hospital. He was listed in serious condition with gunshot wounds to his back and underarm, police said.

Police could not say Tuesday night if the teen was charged as an adult and when he was scheduled to appear in court.
