Teacher Carjacked Outside School In Auburn Gresham
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A teacher was carjacked Thursday morning outside a school in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood.
Police said the 29-year-old woman was attacked outside Perspectives Charter School at 81st and May streets as she arrived for work around 6 a.m.
The woman, a high school English teacher, had just parked her car in the parking lot when a man approached her. He was holding a rifle and told her to hand over the keys. The man took her keys, stole her car, and drove away.
The woman was not injured. The school's principal said the teacher came inside and called police. After she was questioned by police, she went home, because she was too frazzled to work.
Perspectives Charter Schools CEO Rhonda Hopps said the school has "robust security" in the building.
"We will clearly look at more to see what else we can do to protect our students and our staff as they enter the buildings in the morning," she said.
Hopps said nothing like this has happened at Perspectives Middle Academy before.
"Nothing this extreme, no. I mean, this is a neighborhood where there is violence in the community, as you well know from tracking the information, but we have a lot of security here," she said.
Police said they are looking for a red 2008 Honda Accord with Illinois license plate N388884.
Perspectives Charter Schools have reached out to parents via robocalls, and also will send out letters later Thursday.
The parking lot has surveillance cameras, and the school has provided the footage from those cameras to police.
