Suspect Charged In Kidnapping Of Wheaton College Student, 2 Others At Large
(CBS) -- A South Elgin man was ordered held on $3 million bond Friday in the alleged kidnapping of a Wheaton College student.
Authorities say a 21-year-old male student at Wheaton College was taken off the sidewalk at gunpoint, in broad daylight outside a Glen Ellyn Starbucks and forced inside a car, last Friday. He was driven around and ordered to withdraw money from ATMs.
The student was not hurt and was let go after a couple of hours, but his bank account had been drained of $1,500.
It was all apparently random. The student did not know his three kidnappers.
One of the three suspects, 18-year-old Abeet Ramos of South Elgin, was ordered held on $3 million bond Friday, authorities said. He is charged with aggravated kidnapping, armed robbery and aggravated unlawful restraint.
There are arrest warrants for the other two suspects. One of them is a juvenile. The other has been identified as Jeremy Jones, 23, of Chicago. Authorities say Jones should be considered armed and dangerous.
Wheaton College officials say they have made students aware of safety precautions they can take but said the kidnapping was "random" event.
"The Glen Ellyn Police Department believes that this student was the victim of a random attack and does not believe there is an ongoing threat to the campus community. We are thankful that the student was not physically harmed and are committed to his ongoing support needs," the college said in a prepared statement.
