Surveillance Video Reveals Laundromat Owner Beaten And Robbed

CHICAGO (CBS) — A dramatic video reveals a Southwest Side laundromat worker being beaten and robbed.

The incident is one of a series of robberies involving coin laundromats and a dry cleaner. CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot has the original report.

Two men, with secure hoodies over their heads, enter APS Cleaners. One jumps the counter, punching Maribel Burgos in the face, eventually throwing her to the ground.

One of the suspects choked Burgos.

"Right here," said Maritza Martinez, daughter of the victim. "And the other guy is hitting my dad and they are like, my mother is telling my dad, 'Let them go! Let them go! Let them go, take whatever you want!'"

The man took handfuls of cash out of the register.

"He is punching her," Martinez said. "When you have got the money already, why did you have to punch her for? Just take the money and go!"

Both men run out the front door. Burgos' daughter showed CBS 2 the scratched on her mother's chest and bruises on her arm, after the violent attack caught on surveillance video.

"They gave her like a fat lip too," Martinez said.

APS Cleaners is among three businesses robbed in just the past three weeks in Marquette Park and Chicago Lawn. Some locations were robbed twice, such as Sparkle Laundromat.

"Things like this, make me so angry," Martinez said. "I am so passionate because my parents try their best, you know, to stick around in the neighborhood."
