Summer Vacation Almost Over For Students In Mundelein
(CBS) -- Summer vacation is almost over for high school students in north suburban Mundelein, where the first day of classes is Aug. 11, two or more weeks before most districts.
Principal Anthony Kroll says Mundelein High decided 20 years ago to move up the starting date in order to finish fall semester exams before the winter break. The advantage is obvious to Kroll and to district superintendent Kevin Myers. They say students get a real vacation over Christmas and New Year's, without looming paper deadlines, homework assignments and finals.
Kroll finds that students return refreshed and ready to begin a new semester. It also dovetails with the Aug. 12 statewide starting date for fall sports practices. The other advantage is being the first to begin summer vacation. This spring, it was May 23.
