Suburban Hospital Sees Surge In Twins

(CBS) – One suburban hospital has seen a surge in the births of twins. Fortunately, the neonatal intensive care unit at Advocate Children's Hospital is equipped to deal with the special challenges these babies bring.

Currently, there are more than a dozen sets of twins at the hospital right now. Even doctors are scratching their heads about these "multiple multiples."

"There's no real reason," Dr. Brett Galley tells CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot. "It's a little out of the ordinary for us."

Among the baffled – in a good way – is new mom Erin O'Neill.

"Identical twins do not run in our family at all, so it was a huge shock!" she says.

Advocate Children's Hospital in Oak Lawn has the only neonatal intensive care unit providing the highest level of care for premature babies in the south suburbs and northwest Indiana. Twins are often born several weeks early.

"You have to deal with all the things that come along with being born prematurely, which can range from respiratory issues, to feeding issues, to jaundice," Galley says.
