Student Guide To Illinois Governor's Mansion Released
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Illinois first lady Diana Rauner is releasing an online student and curriculum guide for learning about the newly renovated Governor's Mansion.
The guide has activities for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. It links lessons in math, science, art, music, reading and writing to the 1855 mansion's occupants and history from the Civil War through the mid-1900s.
Rauner spearheaded private fundraising of $15 million to renovate the nation's oldest consecutively inhabited governor's house.
She says the guide is ideal for use before or after tours of the downtown Springfield home. It highlights Illinois Govs. Richard Yates, Richard Oglesby, John Altgeld, Henry Horner and Adlai Stevenson II.
It covers key events including Chicago's 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, the Haymarket Riot, women's suffrage and the Great Depression.
