Severe thunderstorm warning for Chicago area, Northwest Indiana on Monday

Storm chances through Monday night in Chicago

CHICAGO (CBS) — Severe storms are sweeping through the Chicago area. Here's what you can expect.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Cook County, Illinois and Lake and Porter counties in Northwest Indiana. According to the National Weather Service, areas under the warning can expect wind gusts up to  60 miles per hour. 

The storms are impacting travel on Monday morning. Chicago's O'Hare Airport issued a ground stop due to thunderstorms around 6:15 a.m.

A marine warning is in effect on Monday due to dangerous conditions along the lakefront. 

Storms are possible throughout most of the day and into Monday night with stronger storms near the Illinois and Wisconsin state line. Gusty wind and hail are the main storm threats. 

Monday's highs will be in the upper 80s with partly sunny skies.   

 Cooler conditions move in for the rest of the week with highs in the 70s.
