Stateville Inmate Convicted Of Murder Dies In Custody

CREST HILL, Ill. (STMW) -- An inmate serving time for a murder conviction at Stateville Correctional Center died Wednesday night at a Chicago hospital.

Derrick Steele, 47, was pronounced dead at the University of Illinois Medical Center at 10:44 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Steele suffered from a "long-term illness" and was taken to the hospital for medical care, Illinois Department of Corrections spokesperson Stacey Solano said, adding that no foul play is suspected in his death.

Steele had been serving a 70-year sentence after being convicted of murder and attempted armed robbery in 1998, according to IDOC records.

An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.
