State Trooper Arrested, Charged With Felonies
(CBS) – He's supposed to arrest criminals, but now an Illinois state trooper is accused of a violent crime himself.
Juan Lopez is charged with two counts home invasion and one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm for an incident that happened last year, while he was off duty, the Illinois State Police said in a news release Thursday. Details were not provided.
Lopez, a 6-year veteran, turned himself in to the Cook County Sheriff's Office.
"The men and women of the Illinois State Police are held to the highest standards of conduct both on and off duty," ISP Director Leo Schmitz said in a prepared statement. "We hold our officers accountable for their actions and respect the criminal justice process."
The trooper is on administrative leave of absence, pending the outcome of the investigation and court proceedings.
Lopez was being held on $150,000 bond, state police said.
