St. Sabina Hosts Gun Buyback

CHICAGO (CBS) -- St. Sabina Catholic Church held a gun turn-in program Saturday, offering $100 gift cards for guns, no questions asked, reports WBBM's Mike Krauser.

A couple dozen people were in line when the doors opened at St. Sabina carrying all sorts of guns under the watchful eyes of Chicago Police officers.

The pastor at St. Sabina, Fr. Michael Pfleger, says even one gun that is off the street or out of someone's home is a good thing.

"I think it is more than just getting guns off the streets, change the mentality that guns has become the first line of offense out here, that that's how we solve our problems," Fr. Pfleger said. "People do that a lot of times because they feel that other person has got a gun and so I got to jump and use mine first."

St. Sabina collects guns anytime, no questions asked.

Annette Lloyd turned her gun into cash. She no longer wanted hers for home for protection. She felt the greater threat involved her grandchildren getting ahold of it.

"Children finding guns and shooting one another or parents, so I just want to turn it in," Lloyd said.

More than 1,000 have been shot in Chicago this year and police say every gun turned in is at least one less stolen from a home -and potentially used in a violent crime.
