St. Sabina Church hosting gun buyback Monday

Gun turn-in program at St. Sabina

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Today is St. Sabina pastor Rev. Michael Pfleger's birthday, and he wants to spend his day helping make his community safe.

St. Sabina Church is hosting a gun buyback event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the church at the intersection of 79th and Racine.

Pfleger said he just doesn't understand "America's love affair with guns."

"It's become part of America's wardrobe, and I just think it's time to deal with this gun issue. Countries that have gotten rid of guns – have put restrictions on them – show that violence has gone down. So I just think I'm going to continue as long as I've got breath to use my voice to deal with this gun issue, and call us to stop making guns our first line of defense," he said. "When people are mad on the road rage, they use their guns. Lose a job? Use a gun. Angry on the street? Use a gun. Mad at your fiancé or your relationship? Use a gun. Gun has become the way we answer all of our problems, and we've got to stop it. We're losing lives every day."

Anyone who turns in a working handgun will receive $100 cash, and if you turn in a working assault weapon, you'll receive $200, no questions asked.

Church staff will turn over the guns to police, who will pick them up and destroy them.
