Spike In Burglaries Has Residents Of Gary's Miller Neighborhood On Edge
(CBS) -- Residents of Gary's Miller neighborhood are on edge after a spike in home burglaries. Police say there have been 15 burglaries and one home invasion in the community between October and November.
CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot reports police say they are working on a number of leads and right now and they know there are two or more people involved.
"In one case it looks like the homeowner was at home, in the vast majority of cases, it is when they are not at home," said Gary Police Commander Del Stout.
Precinct committee person Carlos Tolliver says, "We have people that come with a certain element to this community and they view this as perhaps some easy prey."
Homeowner Nathan Shaw calls the burglaries "upsetting." Shaw says that he has seen a police patrol the area frequently.
"We plan on keeping that pace up until the burglaries go down and the suspects are apprehended," he said.
He says the burglars mostly steal things that are easy to carry like small electronics, TVs and cell phones.
Stout says the burglars the manner that they enter the homes varies, but they frequently go through patio doors. He recommends homeowners leave lights and TVs on and use alarm systems.
