Someone You Should Know: 'Miss Priscy'
(CBS) -- For more than a decade, she has opened her home to children who need some place to go after school.
CBS 2's Harry Porterfield says "Miss Pricsy" is someone you should know.
Eleven years ago, Priscilla Jones, a singer and a poet, opened the door of her East Garfield Park home to young people. She began by offering activities, and she soon realized she had created an institution.
It quickly grew from music and dance to writing sessions.
Forty kids, aged 6 to 25, visit her four times a week. Kids have to write a book about themselves to get in. The older participants serve as tutors.
The sessions are free.
"They needed my help. They needed a safe environment, and they picked me. I couldn't put a price on that," Jones says.
She tells us she receives small donations and help from friends and family, and she works by visiting 30 schools as a guest teacher.
When she was seven, Terri Drape was a student here. Now, she's in nursing school.
"Whenever you need someone to be there for you, Miss Priscy always has your back," Drape says.
