Someone You Should Know: Loaves & Fishes Community Food Pantry
(CBS) -- Hundreds of families in DuPage County depend on this place to put food on their tables.
Now Loaves & Fishes is receiving special recognition. CBS 2's Harry Porterfield says the people there are all Someone You Should Know.
This year, Loaves & Fishes celebrates its 30th anniversary as a source of food and other services for a community of eligible recipients in DuPage County.
The agency provides free food to some 600 families who come here to fill their shopping carts every two weeks.
"We see a lot of single moms with children, a lot of families with children. They are working families, but they're under-employed," CEO Charles McLimans says.
A typical family will find they need the agency for about three months to help them out. Last week, the United Way of Metropolitan Chicago named the organization their Safety Impact Agency of the year.
Fifteen hundred volunteers donate their time and energy to help run the organization.
"Knowing that somebody wouldn't be hungry tonight because I gave a little bit of time is a great feeling," volunteer Joyce Lipski says.
In 1984, the organization began life in the basement closet of a church in Naperville. In 2011, it expanded its operation to a $3 million, 17,000-square-foot facility.
Justin Logue, his wife, Terra, and son Anthony make monthly visits.
"It means to me that there are still people out there that care about others," Justin Logue says.
