Someone You Should Know: Custom Cake-Maker Jordyn Gaines

(CBS) -- She's only 20 years old, but she's already an experienced businesswoman who makes incredible works of cake art.

CBS 2's Harry Porterfield says Jordyn Gaines is someone you should know.

Poet John Keats said a thing of beauty is a joy forever. Even though Gaines' cakes are things of beauty, they won't last that long.

She's been making elaborate cakes since she was 16. Edible ornaments include her signature bows.

"I really like making things pretty. Although I know how to make everything – bagels and pies – cakes you can really decorate and make them beautiful," Jordyn says.

Pam Robinson, Jordyn's mom, realized after seeing what  her daughter was doing that she was not just another cake maker.

"We realized right away that she had a gift because she didn't have any formal training. She kind of just taught herself," Robinson says.

In high school, Jordyn dreamed of being a professional cheerleader, but a bullying incident caused her to quit the cheerleading team and start making cakes.

Now, she turns out 20 a week in response to orders -- everything from a Bible cake to baby cakes to basketball-themed cakes. She has made cakes for celebrities such as Chaka Khan and Dwyane Wade.

"I want to make the best cake that they've ever seen so that it can be the highlight of their special day," Jordyn says.

Business has been good for her. So good, she is opening her own bakery in Country Club Hills.
