Someone You Should Know: Chicago Math And Science Academy Robotics

(CBS) – Twelve thousand students from 38 countries will be competing in a robotics world championship. The team representing Chicago is from the Chicago Math and Science Academy.

CBS 2's Harry Porterfield says the team members are all someone you should know.

The CMSA's robotics program began in 2012. Even in that first year, students began winning awards for their designs.

As a member of the Robo Titans, Roshaan Siddiqui has helped create the Atlas 7006. The object of the competition is to use the robot to gather up as many balls as possible and place them in tubes of varying sizes.

He's thrilled at the upcoming competition because it could help his college prospects.

"I want to be a mechanical engineer," Siddiqui says.

School principal Aydin Kara is elated at the progress the students have made in developing their knowledge of robotics.

"Once they are given the guidance and direction, they can do anything they want," he says.

The CMSA team is one of only five Illinois teams to compete in the world championship and the only one from the Chicago area.

The FIRST Robotics Competition will be held in St. Louis Wednesday through Saturday.
