Snow, Changing Temps Keeping Pothole Repair Crews Busy
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Under all that snow lies a deeper problem for the city of Chicago: potholes.
"We usually see the number of potholes grow later in the winter than they do traditionally in December, but because we've had wild fluctuations in temperature, we've seen more potholes this past month," said Pete Scales, spokesman for the Chicago Department of Transportation.
The city filled more than 37,000 potholes in December. In all of 2013, the city filled 625,000 -- the most in four years.
Scales said the city usually has at least 14 crews out filling potholes.
This time of year, potholes get filled with something that's slightly different - and more expensive - than the filler in summertime.
Before the crews get back to the potholes, Scales said they'll clear snow from the city's 25 miles of protected bike lanes.
