Sink Holes Sprouting On North Side
(CBS) – Sink holes are sprouting like flowers on the North Side.
One of them is big enough to swallow a large exercise ball and deep enough to devour a small child. A smattering of North Center, Roscoe Village sink holes are the talk of the neighborhood -- and not in a good way.
Someone has already gotten hurt. A woman stepped into one while getting out of her car, and Pastor Bobby Strickland saw it happen.
"It's like it was set up for her just to go down," he tells CBS 2's Dana Kozlov.
She didn't want to go on camera but sent these pictures of her badly bruised foot and toes, injured hand and the sinkhole itself.
Sink holes are not to be confused with potholes. Potholes are holes in an otherwise intact street. The sink holes occur with cave-ins, and the city's Water Department is responsible for fixing the infrastructure.
Forty-Seventh Ward Ald. Ameya Pawar's chief of staff says they've gotten sink hole calls and passed them on to the department.
