Shoppers Test The Waters On Thanksgiving

(CBS) -- An estimated 140 million shoppers are expected to take advantage of the long holiday weekend—which started Thursday.

CBS 2's Jeremy Ross was inside a Toys R Us on the North Side, where they were expecting long lines on Thanksgiving Day.

The average American was expected to spend about $720 on gifts this season. A few shoppers at Kmart Thursday said they were testing the shopping waters of Thanksgiving.

Their observation: It was much less chaotic then Black Friday excursions to the stores.

They mused that perhaps the spirit of Thanksgiving keeps everyone calm and focused.

There's a good reason for that observation. The National Retail Federation says less than 20 percent of this weekend's traffic will fall on Turkey Day.
