Shooting leaves woman, 43, dead on Chicago's South Side

Woman shot, critically wounded in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A woman was shot and killed by a teenage boy in the South Shore neighborhood Thursday afternoon, police said.

Police said at 3:55 p.m., the 43-year-old woman was in the residential building in the 6800 block of South Cornell Avenue when a 17-year-old boy shot her. 

The woman was shot four times in the head, and was pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Medical Center, police said.

The boy ran off, police said. A gun was recovered at the scene, but the shooter remained at large Thursday night, police said.

Police scoured the neighborhood in search of the boy after the shooting. Meanwhile, forensic evidence technicians lined up along busy Stony Island Avenue right behind the block where the shooting took place.
