One Dead After Shooting At Bridgeview Secretary Of State Facility
BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. (CBS) -- A man is dead and two suspects are in custody following a shooting in Bridgeview outside an Illinois Secretary of State facility Wednesday around 1:35 p.m.
Bridgeview police said the incident happened at 7368 W. 87th St. in Bridgeview. The victim was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where he was pronounced dead.
He was identified as Jawaun L. Davis, 21, of East 73rd Street in Chicago. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office said he died of multiple gunshot wounds.
The shooting took place outside of the building in the parking lot. The victim was not an employee of the Secretary of State's Office.
Police said the suspects ran up to a man who was waiting in line outside the facility, shot him, got in a car and drove off. Authorities late Wednesday were talking to multiple people waiting in line.
Authorities said this was a targeted shooting.
"Because of social distancing, I think that helped a lot. In the fact that only one person was shot because of the six-foot distance between people," said Bridgeview Chief of Police Ricardo Mancha. "Only he was targeted. And only he was hit."
Mancha added that at no point was the general public at risk.
"I think this was a specific instance with a specific purpose in mind. I don't think that any of the residents here have to worry. This has nothing to do with the Village of Bridgeview. It just happened to be something between two people," Mancha said.
Police took two men into custody in a nearby neighborhood. A child who was believed to be in the car was also put into a police cruiser.
Police late Wednesday said the two persons of interest remained in custody, and two weapons were recovered.
