Suspect in custody after hourslong standoff in McHenry County

CHICAGO (CBS)-- One person was in custody, and a shelter-in-place has been lifted in McHenry County, after shots were fired inside a home, leading to an hourslong SWAT standoff.

The McHenry County Sheriff confirmed one person was taken into custody around 8 a.m. after the standoff.

According to Johnsburg police, officers responded to the 3600 block of Fillmore Road around 11 p.m. Tuesday, after shots were fired inside the house. When officers arrived, they identified a mental health incident and the standoff began.

A woman, believed to be the suspect's wife, was inside the residence at the time of the incident. She was safely taken out of the home by police as officers negotiated an end to the standoff.

After the suspect was taken into custody Wednesday morning, he was taken to a local hospital to undergo an evaluation.

After the standoff ended, police were seen bringing several rifles and magazines out of the home.

A neighbor who said she's known the couple in the home for decades listened to everything unfold overnight.

"Not knowing what was going on. … At first, we didn't know exactly where it was located. So you didn't know if were you in danger? You know, was it somebody else? But then when we figured it out it was over across the street, then we were worried for their safety," Pam Solomon said.

Johnsburg schools have been canceled for the day.
