Several Rescued From Fire In Dolton
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Firefighters rescued several people stranded on the balconies of a condominium building in south suburban Dolton late Tuesday night.
The fire started around 10:15 p.m., on the 2nd floor at the Fountaincrest Condominiums at California Avenue and Greenwood Road in Dolton.
At least one person jumped from a 2nd floor balcony to escape the flames. Firefighters rescued another five using ladders.
The fire was mostly contained to the one unit where the fire started, but heavy smoke spread to the hallways on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors.
"I live on the 4th floor, and the smoke was getting really heavy, to the point it was turning black, choking you. The neighbors were able to knock on each other's doors, so that we could all get out to safety," said resident Larry Turner.
More than 30 people were evaluated by paramedics at the scene. Six people were hospitalized for minor injuries, mostly caused by smoke inhalation.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
