15 Hospitalized In CTA Bus Crash In Gage Park
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Two dozen people were reported injured on Monday Morning in a crash between a CTA bus and an SUV on the Southwest Side.
According to the CTA, the head-on crash between a northbound Number 49 bus and an SUV happened shortly before 10 o'clock on 50th Street and Western Avenue, WBBM Newsradio's Bernie Tafoya reports.
Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford says witnesses had reported seeing the southbound blue Chevy Suburban drift into the northbound lanes of Western and into the path of the CTA bus.
A source says a witness described seeing the SUV driver appear to become more alert after the bus driver honked her horn, but it was too late to avoid the collision.
Langford says the SUV driver was hurt the worst.
She was taken in serious to critical condition to Stroger Hospital.
Two children in the back seat were less seriously hurt.
Langford says the CTA driver and 20 people on the bus were injured.
Nine of those people were treated on-the-scene and did not want to go to a hospital. The bus driver and 11 passengers were taken to hospitals, mostly in good to fair condition.
Langford says eight ambulances converged on the scene along with other police and fire crews.
