Service Restored On Metra Electric Branch After Semi Hits Pillar
CHICAGO (STMW) -- Service on the Electric District's South Chicago branch is up and running again early Monday after an alleged drunken driver crashed into Metra's power lines Sunday evening.
The driver of a semi heading south in the 7400 block of South Exchange struck a pillar holding electrical wires overhead about 5:30 p.m., according to Metra and Chicago Police officials.
The 40-year-old semi driver, who lives in Chicago, was cited for DUI and unlawful damage to a structure, police said. He is scheduled to appear in traffic court Jan. 15.
Service was temporarily suspended between Stony Island and 93rd Street, according to Metra's website.
As of 3:50 a.m., all train service has been fully restored. Crews worked throughout the night to make the necessary repairs.
The transit agency initially said that trains No. 300 and 303 would not operate, but both trains will now be making all scheduled stops.
"Metra apologizes for the inconvenience and appreciates your patience," according to the alert posted to the agency's website.
