Second Suspect Charged In Streeterville Carjackings

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A second suspect has been charged in connection with a series of carjackings in Streeterville last month.

Joe Jackson, 24, was due in bond court Monday afternoon, charged with two counts of aggravated vehicular hijacking, and one count of parole violation.

Police said he was identified as the gunman who approached a 31-year-old man parked in a garage in the 300 block of East Illinois Street on May 12, and forced the driver out of the car at gunpoint, then fled in the vehicle.

Jackson also allegedly approached a man and woman parked in a garage on the 400 block of North McClurg Court on May 10, pointed a handgun at them, and forced them out of their vehicle, police said.

Police also said Jackson mugged a 39-year-old man in a garage in the 500 block of North McClurg Court on May 11, when he allegedly pointed a gun at the victim and demanded his wallet. The victim complied, and Jackson ran off.

Last month, police also charged another man in connection with the Illinois Street carjacking and the May 11 mugging in the McClurg Court garage. Demetris McCrea, 22, was charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking and aggravated fleeing police.

Police have said Jackson and McCrea might have been driving a stolen Jeep Cherokee when they held up the victim in the May 11 mugging. A 2014 model Cherokee had been stolen from a nearby garage the night before.
