Second Suspect Charged In Lake Shore Drive Death
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A second man has been charged with murder in connection with the death of a woman who was struck by a pickup truck on Lake Shore Drive while fleeing an armed robbery in the Gold Coast neighborhood.
Devonte Dodd, 20, has been charged with murder, attempted robbery, and mob action, police said Sunday.
Dodd allegedly was among a group of young men who approached 32-year-old Pamela Johnson and her 43-year-old boyfriend around 1:40 a.m. on May 29, and announced a robbery.
The day after Johnson died, police released surveillance images of the incident, hoping to question at least eight people who might have played roles in her death.
Sources said parents who noticed their children in the video came forward. Police said they identified the people responsible because of witnesses and parents cooperating with the investigation. Additionally, some of the young men turned themselves in, claiming they were chased by other men with guns.
Police have said another suspect, 18-year-old Semaj Waters, pointed a gun at Johnson and her boyfriend, who both tried to run away across Lake Shore Drive. Dodd allegedly chased the victims before Johnson and her boyfriend were struck by a pickup truck in the southbound lanes near Huron Street.
Johnson was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her boyfriend was also treated at Northwestern, and has since been released.
Waters was charged Friday with murder, attempted robbery, and mob action. A judge set his bail at $500,000 on Saturday.
Dodd was due to appear in bond court Monday afternoon.
